From the ancient to the modern era

The first evidence of cosmetics stems from Ancient Egypt approximately 6000 years ago. There are several reasons for using natural resources as cosmetics, protection from the sun and harmful insects are the foremost reasons. To honour Gods and Goddesses in a spiritual aspect, cosmetics had been used widely. Later it became a status symbol. Ladies of the upper class started using various kinds of cosmetics to look different from the common people. To preserve their youth, Egyptians trusted castor oil, sesame seeds and moringa oil.

For cleansing, the skin, clay and olive oil are used widely. Egyptian women allegedly enjoyed a milk bath, sometimes accompanied by honey. The best skincare and haircare secrets from Nature discovered by these people are Aloe, Myrrh and frankincense. Frankincense is used mainly as an anti-ageing and anti-wrinkle.

The word cosmetics first stemmed in Rome. In the matter of skincare and beauty rituals, they are one step ahead of ancient Egypt. The concept of cosmetics and Spa have come into existence in Ancient Greece. They used to spend an entire day in Spas. They have started using their own cosmetic products developed by their experts. Face toner and scented water were also very popular that day. Later on, painting and heavy layered makeup came into existence for the first time. But society was changing vastly.  People got introduced to words like blemishes, bleach, and pigmentation. And without any expensive material, they again take natural resources as a beauty regime.

The invention of artificial cosmetics

In Europe, new chemical ingredients and their blending methods were introduced to brighten up the skin. Whitening foundation became very popular. But the side effects of chemical ingredients were also noticed by the doctors. People again returned back to natural resources like honey and lemon juice for cleansing and bleaching. But the remarkable change was yet to come with the invention of beauty cream and baby powder. People gladly accepted these beauty products.

This incident became a phenomenon. New cosmetic products started developing in a grand and exploded way. The 20th century witnessed the birth of countless skincare and cosmetics products developed as profitable businesses. Various cosmetic brands came into existence. All these products are widely celebrated among every status of people. Expensive products which were beyond the reach of middle-class people now became affordable.

But as the price depleted, the quality of those beauty products also became substandard. Definition of cosmetics gradually changed from natural products to chemical ones. People started believing in the brand and as a consequence, they got to bear the side effects of these chemical products while enjoying the counterfeit beautification.
